American Hustle ★★★★

Director: David O. Russell

Cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner

“American Hustle” is a fictionalised story about the ASCAM scandal in the 70′s and 80′s.  Christian Bale and Amy Adams are Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser, two con artists who are manipulated by Bradley Cooper’s FBI agent Richie DiMaso into using their conning skills to help capture corrupt politicians.  They are on top of the world until they are caught out.  The FBI agent is determined to arrest the politicians and make a name off it.  But little does he know that they have their own plan.

This film is more about the characters themselves.  The characters are engaging and the actors are captivating and mesmerising in their roles.  Lawrence provides most of the humour through her thoughtless gaffes which lead to trouble, her designed outbursts and mishaps, one which involves a microwave.  Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper also flourish, giving an air of sexual tension to the film that seemingly gives off the impression that it may explode at any moment as the narrative carries on.  But it’s Christian Bale who plays the lead that is really mesmerising and will suck you in as con artist Irving Rosenfield.  Robert DeNiro also makes an appearance as a mobster and is brilliant as always in his role.

This is a brilliantly written film with sharp dialogue.  There’s plenty of twists and turns throughout, however the ending is a bit predictable.  “American Hustle” is a funny, thrilling and compelling film.
