It didn’t seem to appear to be hurt but just shocked understandably!! It just jumped about a bit, so a family member quickly scooped up the bird. The bird which hadn’t died of shock at this point was chirping and tweeting in a panic.

Now I’m an animal lover but I have to admit I was completely stuck as to what to do with this bird, as I have no experience with what to do when your cat brings in a baby bird!

So each family member had a phone each and we called a wildlife shelter or animal sanctuary of some sort for any help or advice. After trying what seemed like a million numbers, we finally got through to a wildlife sanctuary in Much Wenlock, ‘Cuan House’ who advised us what to do. They unfortunately couldn’t take the bird until the morning, so they advised us what to do that evening and night.

It didn’t feel right to call it ‘the bird’ so we decided on the name ‘Conway’ as in Conway Twitty, ( Twittty, birds tweet..!)

Anyway the shelter told us to keep Conway in a box and the main priority was to keep him warm, as being only a baby, Conway wasn’t able to regulate his own body heat. So we wrapped a hot water bottle in a fleece for Conway to sit on. Secondly poor Conway needed feeding, thankfully it didn’t involve going out into the garden to dig up worms!

Instead what Cuan House suggested was to mix a bit of cat food with water to make it runny and then with a spatula or a pair of tweezers drop it into Conway’s mouth without puncturing the inside of his mouth. They suggested that we do this every 45 minutes! We did this as much as we could, but Conway would let us know when he had, had enough.  He seemed to be settling as he was nested comfortably on his heated fleece and his box placed in front of the heater, though there was no guarantee that he would make it through the night.

In the morning we rushed to see how Conway was doing, as we peeped it into the box it was such a relief to see Conway looking back at us with his cute little eyes; he even greeted us with a chirp.

I must admit it was quite sad having to get Conway ready to take him to Cuan House, but we knew it was the only way he would receive the proper care and attention he needed.

When we arrived at Cuan House, we were greeted by cages of birds; we knew Conway wasn’t going to get lonely!

The lady who runs the shelter invited us in and got straight into inspecting Conway, she found that he had been pierced slightly and would need some antibiotics.  She told us that if Conway hadn’t been bought in and not treated, it would have become septic and poor Conway wouldn’t have made it!

She told us that Conway would be put into a cage; from there he would be put into a heated box before making the final trip to the aviary, and once he’s completed those steps they will let him fly.

We found out that Conway was a blackbird and that they don’t like to be by themselves, so she said she would put him in a cage with a stalling. How cute!!

We were told that unfortunately at this time of the year a lot of baby birds fall out of their nests as they are trying to learn to fly, and if there isn’t anyone there to see it and put them back in their nests straightaway, the birds unfortunately die.

It is so important that shelters such as Cuan House exist, because without them, little darlings such as Conway wouldn’t make it.

Although it gets some funding from the RSPCA, a lot still falls heavily on fundraising and donations.

It’s so important that animals shelters get as much funding and donations as possible so they can continue with the outstanding and life saving work that they do, so poor little birds such as Conway has a chance to survive.

Cuan House is a wildlife rescue centre run by its founder Megan Morris-Jones. It takes in sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, with the aim of nursing them back to health. On arrival, casualties are given First Aid in the form of pain relief, fluid therapy, warmth, treatment for shock as appropriate. Any patients needing veterinary intervention are seen promptly by a local vet, who has been treating the wildlife for the last 15 years.
Once fully recovered, great emphasis is placed on returning them to the wild, usually back to the area from which they came so that they are in familiar territory. Lemon Salt Scrub – Detoxifying and fabulous for dry skin!

1/2 lemon fruit

50g fresh ginger

500g salt

Jojoba or any vegetable oil.

Chop the lemon and ginger, or use a blender to coarsely chop. Mix all of the salt, lemon and ginger together in a bowl, making sure the juice of the lemon is included. Add oil depending on how rough or smooth you want the scrub to be. For the best results – scrub onto dry skin before showering and spend at least 10-15 min massaging in on to your whole body.
This scrub is very hydrating so there is no need to apply moisturiser afterwards.

Invigorating Coffee Scrub

500ml natural yoghurt

1 tablespoon coffee powder

1 tablespoon brown sugar

Natural yoghurt is rich in enzymes so this scrub is very effective for exfoliating your skin. Mix the coffee, sugar and yoghurt in a bowl. For the best results – scrub onto dry skin before showering and spend at least 10-15 min massaging in on to your whole body.
For silky smooth skin, apply moisturiser after shower.

Cucumber and Aloe Wrap – Cool and sooth sunburn skin!

½ cucumber

3 pieces of fresh aloe vera.

Coarsely chop the cucumber and use a blender to make it into a smooth mass. Put the mass in a strainer to get rid of excess water.  Remove the meat from the aloe vera and rinse it under running water, (the yellow juice in aloe vera will be itchy on your skin so needs to be washed off). Use a blender for the aloe vera too before mixing it all together in a bowl.  Apply the paste to your skin and wrap with plastic kitchen wrap.

Refreshing Cucumber and Honey Facial – Cool down and refresh your face

1 table spoon natural yoghurt

1 table spoon of honey

20 thin slices of fresh cucumber

Rose water or cucumber water

Your own moisturiser

Yoghurt is rich in enzymes which makes natural yoghurt excellent as a cleanser to your skin. Apply and massage gently for 1 minute before cleaning with a warm wet towel. Tone the skin with your daily toner to rebalance your skin ph.

Honey is calming for the skin so apply and massage for around 3 minutes, you should use sticky honey if available. Lie down and apply cucumber slices to your face on top of the honey, finish by putting two on your eye lids. Leave for 10-15 minutes. Remove the slices and use a warm, wet towel to remove honey residues. Tone again and apply moisturiser.

Rehydrating Coconut Hair Treatment

Coconut milk (amount varies depending on length of hair)

Warm up the coconut milk to tepid temperature. Make sure it has a slightly thick consistency before massaging it into your hair and scalp, this can be done to dry hair or wet hair. Leave the milk in for 15-20 min so your hair gets sticky and little bit hard as the milk dries. Rinse and allow to dry naturally.

To celebrate the release of the upcoming JT movie The Open Road, we’ve got something a little bit special for you… with the sun finally paying us

an extended visit and Spring slowly turning into Summer it’s almost time for that essential summer rite of passage – the road trip.  Of course as much as we’d all just like to jump in the car and hit the road, Kerouac style it’s probably not the best idea.

In The Open Road, out on DVD 25th April, Carlton (Justin Timberlake) and his friend Lucy go on a road trip across America to find his estranged father and bring him home.  Maybe your car journey won’t be as dramatic and maybe your passenger won’t be as good looking as JT, but whether you’ve got a long drive to a festival or a summer adventure coming up, Emma O’Boyle, our TripAdvisor spokesperson, has kindly put together some some top tips for avoiding the many potential road trip pit falls.

Prepare your car – have your car inspected before you go, change your oil andcheck fluid levels. Make sure you have all relevant documents – including licence,insurance and registration – and that you know where they are all at all times. Keepa cool bag with drinks and snacks and re-fill this at rest stops. Bring a first aid kit.

Keep small change in several currencies – be prepared for road tolls. Most tollbooths will accept coins only, so avoid an embarrassing reversing-out-the-queue moment and make sure you have change to hand.

Bring suncream – you can and you will get sunburn through the car window

Beware roaming charges – check with your mobile provider before you leave tofind out what charges you could incur and how best to avoid these

Bring zone-out material – you’ll be in close quarters and ‘alone time’ will bedifficult to come by when your fellow road-trippers start getting on your nerves.Stock up your iPod, tablet, laptop etc. with your favourite TV shows and DVDs so youcan block everyone else out when needs be.

Miles and Kilometres – Be aware that your speedometer may be in miles, but thespeed limit measured in kilometres depending what country you’re in. Know theconversion (1 mile = 1.6 km) or you could end up with a nasty speeding ticket

Be ready for sleep – bring a blanket and pillow to make yourself more comfortablein between driving shifts and, if you’ve booked a hotel, remember that most check-intimes are between noon and 2pm, so plan your driving schedules accordingly

Prepare a good and very extensive playlist – you will have difficulty finding aradio station in many locations, so bring your own music. Make sure you playlist isat least a few hours long so you don’t find yourself listening to the same ten songson repeat

Go to the bathroom at every rest stop – even if you don’t need to becausethe next one could be very far away. This will avoid any uncomfortable and embarrassing roadside stops.

Bring embassy and government contact numbers with you – in case you loseyour passport or any other important documentation, be sure you know where your nearest embassy or consulate is at all times so you can you rectify the situation assoon as possible

Share the driving and do it in shifts – a tired driver is an unsafe driver

So there you have it, top tips from the professionals… so if you end up spending your bank holiday in a conked out car somewhere up the M1 don’t come crying to us for help!!
