Directed by Kate Novack
Cast – André Leon Talley, with interviews from Anna Wintour, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs
It’s always enjoyable and a little fascinating watching docu-films and “The Gospel According to André” is certainly that. The docu-film shows André’s humble beginnings in North Carolina where he was raised by his grandmother, to his spectacular career in the world of fashion of 40 years. So it goes without saying that there would be appearances from notable fashion royalty including Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Valentino and Manola Blahnik to name but a few.
His colourful and commanding presence, are matched in his world fashion signature styles of lavish capes, kaftans and larger than life animal print coats.
So it’s lovely to see a glimpse of the statuesque man behind the name and legend and see archival photos and video footage of his family and church-going, with mentions of race and black identity, delicately woven through.
Moments when you hear anecdotes from the great Whoopi Goldberg and Marc Jacobs are warming, but to hear real truths from André himself are truly touching.
A must see for lovers of fashion, fashion history and those who appreciate truth and glamour, with a little dazzle thrown in!
